"What Kind of Power You Got"
"Brown Queenie Yeh, Yeh"
Estrella 20/20 at Garage Shock 1999
-how did the whole things happened for this time???
Atsushi: Just to be on the garage-shock '99 of course
Hiro: And also to record an ep for Estrus 10".
Masato: We don't really know why...
-how do you guys feel about people saying you do way better in the US than in JAPAN....
H: really? that's what people are saying about us?
A: I fell happy about that, but at the same time have sad feeling to it...
actually, no, to be honest, I'm really happy about it!!(laughter).
M: yeah, happy and sad, weird feelings at the same time....
-So you ARE conscious about doing better in the US
A: to me, I just play as same wherever I'm on the stage. but we get much more great responses from the US audiences for sure. we even get greater at
mosphers after the show finish
M: well, playing in Japan is nice too though...
H: hmmmm.... I can't really be so decisive to myself on this, but me person
ally, that stage at Garageshock was one of my greatest lives in the recent shows.
-you should just move overseas and do Japan tour like once a twice in 5 years....
A: then get me a decent job to do in the US. find us nice cozy apartment, cars as well.
H: yeah, I totally want to do that too!!
-how did that recording go?
A: oh, it was the best we've done. it went much much more satisfactory than
we were expected.
M: yeah it was lots of fun.
H: to me, it was....just as great as usual.
-it seems like Estrella=Tim Kerr...somewhat unseperatable relations....
A: I'm not really sure what Tim's thinking about that, but for us, he's like our fourth member, and the greatest revolutionist. a musical revolutionist.
-so the Estrella sounds have to be brought out by Tim.
A: he's the only one we can rely on to about our sound.
M: hmmmm.....not necesally no, but I can't deny that he must have been the
most grateful to us, naturally...
-why he is so special to you?
M: because he doesn't just do in his favorite or in his own way. not to make the sound up to his personal types of genre.
A: hmmmm....bands like BIG BOYS,POISON 13 and LHF, he's always been involved with the greatest and most important bands, and we've always learn a lot from what he does in any aspects of music he play. and when we hearing his words(advice) make us realize lots things, which wouldn't be able to notice just by ourselves....
H: yeah he has this some kind of power to draw people's potentials out which would have been unconcious until we spend some time with him....
-sounds like the latest recordings went much satisfactly then.
A: totally.
H: my tempo went kinda blurrely, but apart from that, sound came out really
clear, the whole thing finished up really nicely.
-anything you've noticed or tried new for this time???
A: in more mental way, yes. Tim definitely pulled out our originalities. it
gave us more confident to what we play in this band.
H: the song itself got kind of renewed, and we even have a sax this time!!!
-who's idea was it to put some sax on(on )?
A: that was Tim's idea.
-this made the Estrella first time to use a horn in your music
A: it just sounded amazing. I was really surprised when I first heard it!!!!!!
M: it sounds so gooood
H: when you throw lots of other instruments, the sounds would get more broaded out
-but didn't it make you nervous about it?
A: not at all. while we were recording this song, Tim asked us "what this so
ng is about????" and we just answered "a revolution!!". then he suggested
us to put some Sax on like, in free jazz kind of ways. it sure made me nervous
when I heard it, it was like got a punched in my face(laughter), but
was exited at the same time too.
M: actually, I wasn't really thinking that way. I simply just wanted to fill some sax in.
wasn't really care about that'd change our sound or anything...but if it was the
regular cheasy Jazzy type sounds, I would have said NO of course.
H: yeah, when I heard that idea, I could already imagine what the sounds are going to be like.
-who ever played that sax?
A: Mark, the singer from SUGARSHACK.
-and who's idea was it to choose?
M: maybe Tim.
A: Tim
-hearing these new songs, I get the imporessions of more swamp/blues influences, and less of those soul type of sounds that you had before
A: That because we just stop caring about showing those maniac tastes of
Swamp/Blues sounds, meaning, it's not that those bits of spices we need, we
would rather be more free to put out what is ourselves, what is 20/20.we
start thinking that we should just play whatever as each of us want to
do, that'll bring ourselves up more clearly. Soul or Blues tastes wouldn't
have to be that necessary, they'll just come along with it spontaneously
afterwards if we could play more freely...
M: is that how you were thinking?(laughter),I just can't be so objective
to what I do....
-how do you think that's happenned? would that be an another Tim's influence?
M: possibly, but maybe we were already trying to be like that from the beg
inning...I don't know.
A: hmmm....same as his....
-Atushi, you're still putting that mask on stage, will that change you at
all? it said to be seeing thing through the mask would change your feelings
or personalities. makes you become more pervy and stuff....
A: yeah, it truly does change myself a lot. I feel like I came from somewhere
up above the sky(laughter).if there's one more thing that'd occur to
me with the mask, I want SUN RA come down to possess me (laughter)
M: that'd make us embarras a lot more....
-how about if you take your mask off?
A: I became a loadie, or manager. or even a merchandise seller at the door.
M: no more stresses(laughter).
-no wonder you guys are surrounded by a bunch of groupies
A: I felt like "come tease me more!!"(laughter). it'll be more gracious people
could see us live though.
M: hmmm....no one came talk to me though.
-well, after all those crazy things you did in the US, how was it like coming back to JAPAN.
A: man, we are just as same as we left here. we are just part of a local bands.
M: weather we went to US or not, that won't change us anything at all. we never be big in there.
but it sure changed me personally....
-but after you guys came back from there, it seemed you guys are finally
start caring about playing in JAPAN more....
A: hmmm...I guess so, making little bit busier than before....
M: no, it's not even enough.
-but more releases made you more active
A: maybe so....Less Than TV's been treating us really well, and lots of other band's
been asking us to play with, or ask us to be on some events and stuff...
-I heard you guys are already having more recordings coming up
A: we have actually finished up this mini-album that'd be out in the end
of April. Eye Yamatsuka from BOREDOMS even did the remix for one of the song....
-it's like, you can write songs after another
A: No, not at all. sometimes we can write songs forever, sometimes we can't
at all. we just hop on that wave and let along with it...
H: I think we are taking more times now to write one song than before....
-OK, any words you want to add?
A: come see us live!!!!!
M: peace.
